Seton Hill University selects QuickLaunch to lead their Identity Transformation

Chicago, IL – May 22, 2020: Seton Hill, a leading Catholic, Liberal Arts University in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, selects QuickLaunch to reinforce IT security and boost productivity of its users (student, staff and faculty). As a part of this association, QuickLaunch will be offering its identity and access management solution (Identity Provider, Single Sign-On, Smart Password Manager with MFA, Adaptive Authentication, Adaptive Authentication, User Self Registration, Automated Provisioning and Mobile App) to support Seton Hill University and their goal to implement a robust IAM solution to achieve business continuity in times of uncertainty.

Why Seton Hill University switched from Shibboleth to QuickLaunch?

Seton Hill University was using Shibboleth Service Provider for various internal and external applications such as Campus Labs Engage, Handshake, Oclc.org, Google Suite, Canvas, Adobe, Salesforce, ALEKS, Evakit, PolicyTech, Starfish Retention and many other applications.

The university initially selected open source Shibboleth SSO for its affordability, but it has the potential to negatively impact the student experience in a few tangible and intangible ways. The updates to third-party systems that they roll into their SSO risk interrupting their system. Being at the whim of open source developers to bridge any potential gaps left a lot of room for uncertainty requiring heavy fixes from their internal development team. This diverted internal development time away from other important projects. The interruptions caused student workflow issues and created a productivity drain for students, staff, and faculty. Seton Hill University chose QuickLaunch as their SSO provider to minimize interruptions and allow the university to continue to be innovative in their solutions for students.

The intention was to provide students with an exceptionally smooth and secure login experience while at the same time allowing technology support staff to quickly work through any potential problems on university’s systems or on student accounts. Moving from their current open source SSO (Shibboleth) to QuickLaunch will allow the university to provide a more stable SSO solution with vendor support that will help to minimize downtime and interruptions to student workflow. This will enable them to focus on what is most important - their education and coursework. QuickLaunch will help the university to leverage additional tech solutions to build a more robust and secure login system.

Adopting QuickLaunch as their identity and access management solution will save time on internal development, allowing developers to spend more time creating a cohesive and secure experience for students. QuickLaunch will enable the university’s development team to more quickly adopt newer technologies like OAuth2 (Shibboleth relies strictly on SAML), which will broaden the options for future changes to the system as a whole. All in all, this will allow Seton Hill University to effectively create a more productive and more enjoyable experience for students, staff and faculty.

Moreover, students will be able to reset their lost/forgotten passwords without the intervention of the IT help desk using smart factors such as Email, SMS, challenge questions and YubiKey. Selfservice passowrd, saving valuable time. and boosting user productivity and saving thousands of dollars spent on password reset requests going through the IT help desk.

By utilizing QuickLaunch’s adaptive authentication solution, IT admins will be able to detect high risk logins prompting users with MFA before logging into university sysems. This will help the institution to prevent account takeover attacks and other security breaches that are the result of shared credentials.

The new users joining the institution will receive an online link to complete their security profile and create their passwords to login to the university system. This will eliminate the practice of sending default passwords over email or physical letters to new users.

IT administrators will be able to streamline and automate user onboarding and offboarding processes while managing digital identities across the institution.
